Malabar House, Fort Kochi

This is the Nr 1 style accommodation in Kerala that has won countless awards, including a national tourism prize - the only Indian hotel to have been awarded the Green Globe 21 certificate for sustainable tourism. Malabar House is located in the historical heart of Cochin and is owned by the German-born Joerg Drehsel, one of the best known European Keralans, and his Spanish wife. The 1755 Dutch residence has been converted into a small luxury hotel (17 rooms and 3 suites) with an interior that manages to seamlessly blend the traditional Keralan style and contemporary design. As soon as you set foot in Malabar House you literally feel you have come home (the possibility that there is a football stadium opposite the hotel does not even enter your mind). Your best choice would be the Garden Suite (Room 11): the adjoining L-shape terrace is an ideal spot to enjoy a glass of wine or simply read a book. You will also find the legendary maharaja chair there; the first thing that springs to mind is probably a gynaecological chair (you have to put your legs up to sit down) but the immediate sense of comfort will shoo these thoughts away. There is a smallish swimming pool in the courtyard under a red jasmine tree; in the bathroom you will find a special Malabar House bath product series (natural ingredients only). Do try a massage, they do it like practically no-one else in the whole of Kerala.
