Raheem Residency, Alleppey

The location of Raheem Residency is marvellous: it is situated on the Alleppey Beach Road with a breathtaking ocean view. The 1868 colonial style building, originally known as the Raheem Bungalow, used to be owned by a respectable local family with close ties to the Ghandies. Since 2003 it belongs to Bibi, a former Irish journalist who left behind everything six years ago and moved to Kerala. Quite a lot of the Raheem antiques and memorabilia are still a part of the décor, including old family photos displayed in the lounge. The most special one is the Raheem honeymoon suite with a Kerala-style roofless bathroom with just the stars above you. There are eight rooms in the Raheem Residency as well as a restaurant; the fare they serve up is strictly traditional cuisine: Bibi believes it would be wrong for India to imitate Europe; why not sample the best of what each place can offer? A Kerala guidebook is among Bibi's most immediate plans; she says the ones available are far from perfect. She is also an excellent shopping consultant and will tell you among other useful things that only raw silk is worth buying in Kerala; you should travel to Bangalore (an hour's flight from Cochin) for anything special.
