Although it is not yet possible to group Riga among Europe's bicycle-friendly cities, bicycling is becoming increasingly popular here. In terms of size, Riga is actually ideal, since most neighbourhoods are within an 8-kilometre radius of the centre and getting to the countryside, for instance, on the bike trail that takes one to the seaside resort town of Jūrmala, is easy.
One of the best places to rent a bike is Gandrs (the Black Stork), a travellers' shop on the left bank of the Daugava River, in the part of Riga that is known as Pārdaugava. Gandrs offers Merida bicycles that are ideal for longer distances, with 21 or 24 speeds, at 1 lat per hour or 6 lats for 24 hours.
Rentals are available throughout the year - even in winter - and helmets, bags and attachments are also on offer. Be certain to use a lock; bicycles do get stolen in Riga, so carelessness can cost you dearly.
