Āgenskalns Market

This market in Pārdaugava small enough to get through on foot with ease, but large enough to offer a sufficient selection goods, making it ideal for quick shopping. It has both an indoor and outdoor section, as well as a number of shops at its perimeter and on its second floor. Designed by architect Reinhold Schmeling, the red, brick Art Nouveau market building was erected in the early 20th century.
The unpretentious café on the second floor is an unusual place. Forget about chic and refined interiors here. A few plastic tables placed between household goods and artificial flower wreaths provide for a very low-key ambience. The food selection rakes up memories of good old, Soviet, cafeteria cooking. It is a great place to try exotic things in small doses, with a nice, window view of the bustling Āgenskalns market down below.
