The Tretyakov Art Gallery, one of the most famous museums in Moscow, is housed in several buildings located in various parts of the city; two of the most significant among them are the historical complex on Lavrushinsky Pereulok and the building at Krimskiy Val. The gallery was founded by the merchant and art collector Pavel Tretyakov who gave the collection assembled by himself and his brother Sergey as a present to the city of Moscow in 1892 and was rewarded with the title of honorary citizen of Moscow.
Today the permanent collection on view at the main building comprises examples of Russian art created during the period of 11th century - early 20th century; the building at Krimskiy Val houses Russian art of the 20th century.
The State Tretyakov Art Gallery also runs temporary art exhibitions on a regular basis.
