La Chata

This is an authentic local restaurant in a street not frequented by tourists. You will recognize it by the tiled facade and the never-ending queue of hungry and thirsty customers. The front room offers a tapas bar, further back there is a smallish dining hall, its walls decorated with a story of a bull fight in photographs. Authentic to the core - and the food is to die for. No-one really speaks English here, but that is not going to be a problem. Everyone is really friendly. There are just two options: either book a table in advance or aim to get there by eightish when the locals haven't started to feel like dinner yet. Check out the bar down the street, very popular among the Madrileños but be warned: by 10 pm there's not enough room to swing a cat. $
