On the outside, a Balenciaga fashion store in London is like most of elegant Mount street red-brick buildings. Dating back to the 18th century, it housed a bank once and still exudes cool elegance. No flashy show-windows either - just an inconspicuous name of Balenciaga outside. Yet, on inside it strikes with a high-tech décor, resembling a huge spacecraft. White padded fitting cabins and a ceiling - a lustrous constellation of orange stars. Another futuristic element, created by French video and installation artist Dominique Gonzalez - Foerster, are multicolored metal pylons. Fitted with motion detectors, they project video images and emit sounds. One pylon might be silent, while another starts to play. Balenciaga designer Nicolas Ghesquière has dubbed it a musical forest and, indeed, it's quite an experience to move around there, as you never know what to expect. A floor design, for its part, adds a British accent to the store, featuring flickering patterns, colors and textures of BBS TV series of the 70ies.
Those, who have visited Balenciaga store in New York, might find its concept somewhat similar. Chelsea store, however, resembles a cross between an art gallery and a grandpa's garage. And, if truth be told, it was a garage once! But now - a tunnel-like entrance, white, a bit battered walls and Balenciaga sculptural and provocative designs inside.
