Winter im MQ
Along with the almost legendary Christmas markets, the Viennese also have a new tradition - celebration in the Museum Quarter. Winter im MQ lasts from mid-November until the 23rd of December. The Museum Quarter becomes a kind of gigantic open-air guest room. There are plenty of concerts, "ice pavilions" featuring pleasant cafes, designer goods on sale, and - when darkness falls - light shows on the facades of the city's most prestigious museums.
They're a veritably surreal orgy of light conducted by well-known artists. The Museum Quarter, created in the former stables of the Habsburg dynasty in 2001, celebrated its tenth anniversary this year. Vienna is already unimaginable without it. It's the eighth largest cultural space in the world, housing not only world-class museums (the renowned Leopold Museum, the contemporary art museum MUMOK, the Kunsthalle Wien, etc.) but also serving as a breeding ground for fresh, creative ideas and their presentation. Events in many fields are hosted here, whether in architecture, music, the visual and performing arts, fashion, theatre, dance, literature, or digital culture. There are also activities for children. According to the stats, circa 69% of the visitors to the Museum Quarter are the Viennese themselves. Not only do they go to see the latest exhibits - it's simply a cool place to be, an oasis of recreation in the very heart of Vienna. The term "an urban living room" is appropriate here.
