The Finnish Design Shop pop-up shop
The Finnish Design Shop has just opened its new pop up shop at the Old Customs Warehouse in Helsinki in cooperation with finnishdesignshop.com. It's a project fusing an internet shop and a real-life design store - select a design item to your liking there and it will be brought right to your doorsteps via post of delivery service. Customers can chose from over 400 titles of Finnish and Scandinavian design items that represent over 100 brands and 300 designers. Typically to pop-up projects, the industrial interior of the place has been left unchanged, just removing dust. The preserved patina of time and culture imprinted on these walls creates a perfect background for the triumph of aesthetics and functionality of Finnish design.
The pop-up shop is located on the waterfront of Katajanokka district - a peninsula famous for its Art Nouveau architecture and a controversially viewed Enso-Gutzeit paper and pulp factory building by Alvar Aalto. There is also a passenger port, a 19th century prison (now Hotel Katajanokka) and several parks in Katajanokka. The shop not only familiarizes its customers with Finnish design but offers a great chance to see Katajanokka or even the entire city - just hop on a Jopo rental bicycle and have a tour around Helsinki. Jopo is not a random choice, of course - this iconic Finnish brand dates back to 1965 and offers easily adjustable city bicycles for different ages and heights. You can pedal your Jopo joyfully, as we have checked!
The red brick warehouse building houses also SIS.Deli café (www.sisdeli.fi), which offers such local food specialties as blueberry liquorice, sea buckthorn marmalade and raspberry chocolate.
The store is opened until the end of September.
