Arts and fashion courtyard on Potsdamer Strasse
Still largely unmarked by gentrification, Potsdamer Straße - or more precisely, one of its courtyards - has become one of the city's hottest arts and fashion destinations. Since last year, the white, industrial and minimalistically robust premises of what was once the printing plant of the Der Tagesspiegel newspaper have been occupied by the Berlin branch of the well-known London art gallery Blain Southern (Potsdamer Straße 77-87; www.blainsouthern.com) and by the concept store Andreas Murkudis.

The result is a monumental space, where contemporary art can be seen side by side with avant-garde fashion and design. Before the Second World War, this part of the city was known for its lively night life and historical 19th century villas, one of which has been miraculously preserved in this newly remodelled exhibition courtyard, offering a unique insight into the Berlin of the past.
Right across the street, a new bookstore - which also serves as a reading room and exhibition space - was recently opened by the owners of the renowned magazine store Do you read me? on Auguststraße. The quirky wooden chairs designed by Italian designer Enzo Mari in 1974 are a delight, while the bookshelves are full of outstanding publications on art, design and fashion.
