Museo del Novecento

Late 2010 saw a new museum dedicated to the 20th century open its doors in the heart of Milan, the Dome Square (Piazza Duomo). The visual image of the museum was designed by the architects Italo Rota and Fabio Fornasari who spent three years on renovating and transforming the Mussolini-era Palazzo dell'Arengario; their effort resulted in an interior that offers museum-goers an opportunity to embark on an emotionally exciting trip through time and space. The new museum aims to explore the history, identity and some of the most fascinating aspects of 20th-century art. The permanent exhibition, comprising over four hundred works of art, is rich in symbols of their time. While the exhibition features works by the likes of Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, Georges Braque and Wassily Kandinsky, the spotlight is, quite naturally, on the museum's collection of Italian art, boasting masterpieces by stars like Amadeo Modigliani, Giorgio Morandi, Giorgio de Chirico, Lucio Fontana, et al. Through 28 February, admission to the museum is free.
