The National Art Gallery (Nacionalin dails galerija)
The National Art Gallery, residing in a new building now, opened its doors in Vilnius in the end of June. It features the arts collection of 20th and 21st century, its permanent exposition comprising 46 000 objects. Its total exposition area is 10 000m², while 2000 m² are being given to the permanent collection.
The National Gallery of Arts has taken up the building of the former Museum of Revolution, which has been under reconstruction since 1999. The main mission of the gallery is to present the development of Lithuanian art within the particular period of time, including its politico-social aspects, both in a regional and international context.
The director of the museum, Lolita Jablonskiene, has commented that the National Art Gallery is „the first Lithuanian art-institution completely equipped with modern museum facilities. For many citizens of Vilnius, it is the first opportunity to see with their own eyes the works of such artists as Edvard Munch and František Kupka".
The territory of the gallery features also a sculpture park.
Until August 23, the National Art gallery offers an exhibition "Dialogues of colors and sounds. The creative work of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis and his contemporaries".
