Sperone Westwater
The new building of the Sperone Westwater art gallery has become the latest addition to the New York list of culture tourist destinations. While the history of the gallery boasting a collection of artwork by prominent artists of different nationalities and from different countries dates back 35 years, recently it expanded its premises by moving to a building designed by Foster+Partners, the company of the British architect Norman Foster. Located in Bowery (one of the oldest streets in Manhattan), the building is a stone's throw from the New Museum of Contemporary Art designed by SANAA. Unlike the 'white cube' of a traditional art gallery, the architecture is dominated by vertical movement. From the outside, the building is reminiscent of a tall eight-storey glass shoe box; eyes are drawn towards the giant red lift perpetually travelling between the second and fourth floors. It is actually a moving exhibition space which offers the visitors an unusual vantage point - an opportunity to view the exhibited works of art while travelling up and down. The new gallery opened with a solo show by the Argentine artist Guillermo Kuitca.
